Program:

Mike Green, beekeeper, manages 4-12 hives in any given year, has been in Auburn since 1988, works in IT industry, loves nature, technology and relaxing with his bees!

Have been in IT industry for 25 years, in this industry, you get really connected to the screen and detached from humanity and get away from touching grass and nature.  I found that I was missing golf and the outdoors. I was introduced to beekeeping; first response was how can that be relaxing or calming, sounds stressful as heck.  He was given the equipment and bees and assisted in getting set up.  I found it to be incredibly relaxing.  Here to share 10 points of beekeeping.

1. Be present - being in the moment allows you to see amazing things happening around you.

2. Be focused - bees have "flight school" the older bees teach younger ones how to fly. That harmony with world around you will open your eyes to all the beauty that's constantly happening around you.

3. Be not afraid - despite being present and focused you will still get stung, it just happens.  Scrape off the stinger and walk away.  Opportunity for personal growth and reminder to be in the moment.  A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor.  I was forced to relax. I had successful surgery with only losing hearing in one ear.

4. Be Humble - there is a saying in beekeeping - "you are never as wise as your second-year beekeeping". Things are humming along, you think all is good then something will happen - drought, heatwave, skunks, bears, etc.... Don't get discouraged.  Stay with it, it will be fantastic.

5. Be vigilant - you are responsible for your hives, help them avoid challenges.

6. Be prepared - beekeeping is fairly low key, spring and fall are busy times; harvest in fall and feeding them in the spring - sugar water same as hummingbirds - while trying to avoid them swarming.

7. Be gentle - staying calm, moving slowly they will not sting, they will be happy.

8. Be kind - be a good neighbor, be aware of surroundings

9. Be healthy - local honey is great for allergies, bee sting therapy is becoming more widely used.

10. Be happy.
