Nancy Nittler: Bring lithium-ion batteries and film plastic to recycle next week. Lithium-ion batteries are often found in cordless rechargeable items like toothbrushes and tools.

Rod Borges not so happy with new hairstylist. It was so bad she wouldn't let him pay! Had successful surgery to repair rotator cuff.
Carolynn $100 happy bucks for the great leadership forum in Reno. While she was in Reno Jolie and Brett Huston, stained Carolyn's Donner cabin deck.
Steve Galyardt has been a Rotarian for 24 years and prior to that was a Kiwanian for 6 years. Never has seen a club president dance in his underwear!
Ron Martinez gave $99 happy bucks for Shawna and he having a great time on the dinner cruise to Emerald Bay that had been a gift from the club. The remaining $1 was for the LA Dodgers going 0 and 2 in the playoffs.
Sam Frazier gave happy bucks that he was able to be at the meeting and his wife Pam was able to attend via zoom. He was also happy to have met the guest from the Gold Country Rotary who was thankful for our members who were Octoberfest sponsors, attendees and bidders on auction items.

Liza Stefani gave happy bucks for the conference she recently attended on behalf of the CA Nurses Association. She had the opportunity to vote on union direction and meet nurses from all over the world. Very inspiring!

Linda Maeding gave happy bucks after seeing the change from an historic picture of Rotarians touring Folsom with no women included, to now with many women members. Rotary finally got smart.

Program: Patricia Bolan gave a follow up presentation on what’s been happening with the Webber Telescope and her PhD research.
Patricia is focusing on studying the first galaxies in the reionization period.
Big Bang Period - particle theorists study this period.
*created a hot soup of fundamental particles
*universe expanded and then cooled down leading to recombination period.
Recombination Period
*first atoms formed (hydrogen-based)
*created webs of matter
*gravitational attraction caused clumps then stars then galaxies
Dark Age Period
*universe cooled enough for gravity to bring together
*mostly neutral hydrogen
*dark because no light can get through
*150 to 300 million years after big bang
Reionization Period (the era she studies)
*300 million to 1 billion light years after big bang
*ionized gas not neutral anymore so light can be seen
*energetic light what is it? It is like shining a bunch of flashlights through dense fog
*reionization burns off the fog of dense gas so we can see the light
*that’s how a star is made
The James Webb Telescope (JWST) has changed how they’ve looked at the history of the universe. Launched Christmas Day 2021. Took 6 months to get to its orbit. Hubbell Telescope sees back to 100 million light years after big bang and the JWST sees 300 million years. It can see the distant galaxies 250 of them even though they are faint as they’re young.
Why?
*galaxies responsible for reionization,
*will help answer outstanding questions
How?
*uses infrared to be able to see the short wavelengths
What?
*looking at 13.1 billion years away
*spreads it out so we can see the elements
*the elements are indicators of its age
*have detected galaxies back farther with more chemical abundance which makes astrologists rethink how long ago the galaxies were formed. Likely much earlier than what was thought.
*universe transformed a lot in the first 7% of its lifetime.
There are still a lot of unknowns about this period. Continued JWST observations will help to solve the remaining mysteries about reionization.
