Program-

The tag team of Steve Grundmeier and Bart O’Brien shared something of the seven-year history of One Book One Community. Ron Martinez was also acknowledged for his years-long contributions as a member of the OBOC Board.

OBOC is a Rotary Program, borne of Auburn Rotary during Bart O’Brien’s club presidency. It was a natural fit for Steve and Bart because they both love to read and they love to chat about books they have read. In addition, promotion of literacy is one of six international Objectives of Rotary.
OBOC Vision Statement:
  • Get Auburn area people to come together around a book to discuss its merits, insights, errors, misconceptions, or whatever.
  • Celebrate our community.
  • Help people learn more about their region and what makes it the place it is today.
  • Literacy in general with a focus on the greater Auburn area.
  • Bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to read, listen, learn, and talk to each other about events and issues that are important to our community.
  • Read critically.
  • Formal demonstration of Rotary’s commitment to literacy.

The first OBOC event, in 2012, centered on the title, Nature Noir. In successive years, the books studied included, Wall of White, The Beekeepers Lament, When the Emperor was Divine, The Underground Railroad, The Best Land Under Heaven, and in 2019, the selection is The Far Away Brothers.

Check the OBOC website at www.oboc.org for many details.

A much-anticipated panel discussion regarding The Far Away Brothers is showcased on April 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Placer High School Auditorium. Do plan to attend that event and other events scheduled as posted on the website.

Panel Moderator: Sandra Guzman
  • Sandra Guzman is the Puente Program Coordinator and Professor at Sacramento City College. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and is active in the Sacramento Community in a wide array of programs and activities.
Panelists:
  • Silvia Lopez, an immigrant from El Salvador who recently became a permanent US resident, lives in Auburn and has direct experience with the gang violence issues of her former home.
  • JJ Mulligan Sepulveda is an immigration attorney from the UC Davis School of Law. His book, No Human is Illegal was published in late January.
  • Marisela Hernandez is the Sierra College DACA Student Program Co-ordinator.
  • Chelsea Oruche spent two years living and working in rural El Salvador as a Community Development Specialist in the US Peace Corps. She worked on various projects including youth development, education, women’s micro-businesses, and sustainable kitchen stoves. She now lives in Los Angeles with her husband EJ and works in corporate social responsibility.”

Meeting Opener

Guests of Rotarians:  Kay Whitaker and Nancy Koschyk of the Passport Club; Greg Bogdanoff, formerly of Fremont, CA is shopping our local Rotary clubs. Greg has served on the District 5170 Visioning Team and is a former President of the Fremont Sunrise Rotary Club.

Weekly Trivia Question-

With regard to the 1985 American science fiction film, “Back to the Future,” the trivia question asked was,  “What was the speed the DeLorean automobile had to reach in order to go backward in time? “  The incorrect guess was 85 mph. The correct answer would have been 88 mph.

Announcements

President Kahl announced the keynote speaker for our Thursday, March 21st Foundation Dinner as Rotary Peace Fellow, Zabit Aimal.  Mr. Aimal grew up in Kabul, Afghanistan and in 2009 at the age of 17 became a translator and cultural advisor for American military troops. Eventually Mr. Aimal made his way to the United States and in 2014 graduated from University of Nevada, Reno, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He is currently working on a Masters Degree in International Politics and Security Studies at the University of Bradford in England.

Melanie Barton is being temporarily cared for at the Rock Creek Care Center, 260 Racetrack Street, Auburn as she recovers from a broken leg sustained in a fall. Melanie is in Room 16. Melanie, and Terry too, would enjoy your visit should you be in the area.

President-Elect Steve Grundmeier attended a recent PETS training and allowed that he drank the cool aid. He was impressed with the guest speakers, with the training offered, and he met other incoming presidents from the 5190 area. Steve also announced Auburn Rotary will have a float in the upcoming Festival of Lights Parade.

Nancy Nittler provided a five-minute training on use of Club Runner and announced that new Rotarian Vicki Weldon will partner with her, and together they will bring Club Runner up to speed. They plan to add an easy-to-use print command so that a hardcopy of the membership can easily be obtained.

Dear Auburn Rotarians,

Brian and I are looking forward to seeing you at  the area 5 Foundation dinner on March 21st.

Last year when I was in San Diego at the International Assembly , my last week of training for DG, I had the opportunity to purchase President Barry Rassin's official theme tie.  Well I purchased 13 of them and President Barry autographed each one.  I will be auctioning them off at the area Foundation Dinners.  If you are unable to be at the dinner and would like to submit a bid just let me know. Your donation for the tie does go directly to the Foundation in your name. I have attached a picture of the tie for you to see. These ties are not able to be purchased by any of the RI vendors.  They are only sold to the DGs at this event so they are pretty special:)

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
