Don Chaddock is a native Californian who spent 25 years working in the newspaper industry. He served as editor of the Sentinel from 2003-2008 and as the editor of the Folsom Telegraph from 2008-2014. He currently works at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s communications office in Sacramento. He’s served as editor of the department’s online news channel since 2014. He is an Auburn resident and has served on the boards for the Salvation Army of Auburn, Placer Arts and the Chamber of Commerce.
Don gave an interesting history of the California Prison System. See the presentation at: documents/en-ca/d1ebc8b5-0992-4c40-a12a-a95ea24e796f/1. It was a detailed, vivid and rich in research; as Don explains it..."an eye-opening experience".
Some of the highlights are:
Walter Colter: Published California’s first newspaper,
built first public schoolhouse and first prison; Impaneled first jury in California; Helped draft California constitution and petition for statehood.
The abandoned boats in SF Bay were repurposed for buildings.
The first State prison, San Quinton, was a ship.
Prisons were privately run so inmates were used for contract labor.
After prisons were transferred to land, the first prison walls were built until 1911 (San Quinton) and 1920 (Folsom).
Our local "Convict" Lake and Rock were likely named after escaped convicts.
The 1927 riot in Folsom was the first time the military was used for a civilian issue.

From Silent Auction Committee:
We need your help to create a memorable silent auction and raffle at the September BBQ. You can donate an item, a gift card or an ever popular "experience". An experience item is an activity that you enjoy and would be willing to share - like leading a hike, taking a group on a boating trip, a lesson or two in your area of expertise or preparing a special meal. Sign up on the clipboard or email Amy Austin. Don't have time right now? We can combine $ from more than one member to create something unique. Need ideas? Ask Amy, Betty or Nancy for suggestions.
Thanks for your support!
