As Bob Litchfield introduced the program, he noted that in his practice of law, the two most emotionally taxing circumstances he sees are cases with clients working through divorce, and working with clients who are experiencing the human tragedy of Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. One of every three seniors will suffer and likely die of Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is the third leading cause of death in the United States.
Bob recommended references, as noted:
“The End of Alzheimer’s” by Dr. Dale Bredesen. There was also a reference to Dr. Bredesen’s website: www.ahnphealth.com
“The 36-Hour Day, a Family Guide to Caring for People who Have Alzheimer’s Disease, Other Dementias, and Memory Loss.” (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book) by Nancy L. Mace and Peter V. Rains. April 18, 2017.
“A Dignified Life: The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care, A Guide for Family Caregivers” by Virginia Bell and David Troxel. September 15, 2002.
Our presenters were Dr. Kristine Burke and Dr. Mark Holthouse, practitioners at the True Health Center For Functional Medicine, located in El Dorado Hills, CA. The ensuing discussion centered on using Dr. Dale Bredesen’s protocol to improve or reverse early signs of dementia. The doctors’ presentation revolved around our new knowledge relative to the causes of Alzheimer’s. Specifically addressed were nutritional and lifestyle issues, and it was stressed that their practice involves “functional medicine,” which is an individualized approach to treating and preventing disease. In such practice, the doctors focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of an individual’s disease or dysfunction so that efforts can be made to eliminate the symptoms of disease and create or restore a person’s health. Functional medicine looks at the whole person, their genetics, and influential environmental and lifestyle factors. By comparison, traditional medicine typically focuses on a set of symptoms or one organ in the human biological system. The doctors shared brief video vignettes of successes met in the practice of functional medicine and the treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
It appeared that a functional medicine approach is worthy of consideration.
