Announcements:

President Carolyn - Elk's Club costs for preparing lunch for our meetings are going up. The Elks will be doing rotations of salad bar items, especially expensive ones like eggs and broccoli, to keep from raising prices.

Liza Stefani – Hogs for the Hungry. $2500 from our club with match from the district, so $5,000 to raise 10 hogs. 8 kids are raising them from local 4-H and FFA. Discounts for feed and butchering have been secured. Need 5 advisors for the kids, on how their efforts impact the community and help them to love community service. Also need people to pick up the feed, to be dropped at Peter's silo. Help needed to build cages for the pigs. Need press release written. Sign up will be sent out.

Chris Vaughan – Together We Give program for donation of $30,000 from our club to local organizations. Suggestions for a beneficiary organization/program should be sent by March 11/2025 with name and 100-word description of the organization or program. On April 8, 2025 our program will be dedicated to learning about the nominated groups and voting on them by the membership. Donations will go to nonprofits with a 501 C3 designation in place.

Steve Snyder – special presentation of Paul Harris (PH) awards. Every Rotarian Every Year program needs $25 from each member to the Foundation. If all members donate, this enables us to get more money from the district. This year, we have given out 28 Paul Harris awards, which means each of those members has donated $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation.

Happy/Sad Bucks:

Betty Bennett - $20 happy bucks because Peter Konrad let her use his office for a RYE meeting instead of driving to Reno in bad weather.

John Donlevy – daughter in AZ this past weekend doing a qualifier 100K race for the Western States run. Daughter power walked almost 42 miles to finish the race, even though it was not her best day and she did not make her time. Dad was very proud of her.

Peter Konrad – $100 Happy Bucks for the Foundation because Betty pulled off the RYE meeting, with amazing amount of work on her part to make it happy.

Gina Acia - $10 for EREY

Raffle:

Only 3 marbles left. $1300 prize money

Nancy Nittler drew; no winner

Speaker today:

Steve Grundmeier introduced Allison LeBaron, a jewelry appraiser. Bio: Economics degree from UC Davis and Graduate Gemologist and Graduate Jeweler degrees from the Gemological Institute of America. One of 50 master gemologist appraisers in the US. Owns full service jewelry business, LeBaron Laboratory, in Granite Bay. Has been appraising jewelry for over 41 years.

“Pearls”/Takeaways from Allison's talk:

-3 market levels in jewelry: insurance replacement, fair market value, liquidation (actual cash value)

-Lab grown gems – 1/10 the cost of real, can pass all the tests. Does not hold it's value; 0 value in the secondary market

-All the diamond mines left in the world will be pretty much mined out in 16 years, so unless more diamond areas are discovered, there will be no more natural diamonds.

-Sapphires are all the rage now, price has gone through the roof.

-Tanzanite is very plentiful, not worth much
