RYE Student Chloe Godfrind’s Report on her year at Placer High School:
Betty Bennett made several announcements before Chloe took the podium:
Dr. Dan Gustavson and his wife, Dr. Mai-Ly Ramirez were presented with a gift of boutique olive oil for having hosted Chloe.
Eden Dorney was introduced as a Rotary Short-Term exchange student. In June, Eden will spend three weeks in Poland, the country of her Grandfather’s birth, and her counterpart host-sister will, in return, spend three weeks in Auburn. As Eden aspires to one day have a professional career with the UN, she believes her exchange program will complement her career goals with her experience of living for a short term in a culture new to herself. She also believes the experience will help foster a better understanding of the world.
Chloe has been hosted by Betty and Dennis Bennett, Dr. Gustavson’s family and by Christopher Balaban’s family.
Allison Swift, our outbound RYE student could not attend the meeting because she was engaged in taking her ACT exam!
Our incoming RYE student comes from France.
Dennis and Betty Bennett have donated $500 to Rotary Fund D in recognition of Chloe.
Chloe Godfrind – “My Exchange Year in Auburn”
Chloe guided us through her year with a PowerPoint video.
She arrived in the U.S. on August 7, 2018 and began four classes Placer High School on August 14, 2018
Highlights: Travel with her host families to see places like LaJolla, San Diego, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon N.P., Las Vegas and everything in between.
She has thoroughly enjoyed opportunities to experience skiing, golf, piano, cooking American cuisine, and even her participation with the PHS Track Team for a time.
French fries and Mexican food were among favorite foods that Chole has discovered.
Chloe related that she will forever be grateful to our Rotary District and her host families, and she particularly values her opportunity to have improved her English language skills. She extends a big “Thank You.”
Chloe will return home and start school on the 15th of September. She anticipates studying Economics and Management.

Polio Update – Larry Rolufs
Statics reported center on the incidence of polio caused by the wild virus. What is not told is the incidence of polio caused by the vaccination to prevent polio. Three countries currently experience cases of polio: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. The circumstance in Afghanistan and Nigeria are “not too bad.” Recently, in April 2019, a fabricated report emanating in Pakistan regarding polio related to vaccination was released. The report went viral on social media, and this has resulted in three years of work against polio being negated. Progress with vaccinations will resume in July 2019, but because of the disruption in vaccination programs caused by the fabricated report in Pakistan, it is likely we will see an uptick in the observed number of cases of polio.
