Linda Maeding inducted our newest member Don Ales. Don is from Michigan and shares the “go Tigers” sentiment with President Kahl. Don received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from East Michigan University and graduate work with Columbia University. Don and Debbie are married with 3 daughters and 6 grandkids which keep them busy going to soccer and baseball games. They have lived in Auburn for 29 years and love this community. Don was previously the Executive Director of the Heritage Foundation, our partner in the Brewfest, and is now the CEO for the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Don is a Leadership Auburn graduate and has been a board member for the Placer County Farm Bureau. His moniker is “Make a Difference”!

Welcome Don

Weekly Meeting Question-

What was the first Beatle’s song to make #1 on the charts?

No fines were paid as the table got it right!  Barb Besana noted that she remembers that song being played when she went into her school gym to get her polio vaccination! Coincidence or foreshadowing?

see answer below-

Program-

Our speaker was Suzi Vinci the Placer County Veterans Services Officer. Suzi is a Northern California Native, born at Mather AFB. She come from a strong military family with 4 generations serving in the US Military, spanning each conflict beginning with WWI. Suzi served 15 years with the US Navy, both active and reserve.  Suzi began her journey in veteran services in early 2007 as a State Service Officer for AMVETS. In 2013 she transferred to Sacramento County Veteran Services and in December 2014 joined the Placer County team. Suzi has been the Placer County VSO since March of this year and is a lifetime member of Women Veterans Alliance, AMVETS and VFW.

Each County has a Veterans Service Office to assist veterans and their families in obtaining State and Federal benefits.  There are a wide variety of benefits earned by the veteran such as health and dental care, pension, tax waivers for disable veterans, specialty license plates, state park passes, college fee waivers for veterans and families, Agent Orange exposure benefits, and support to families at time of death including rifle team honors and access to burial at the Dixon military cemetery.

Suzi emphasized that veterans who have not yet accessed their health benefits consider doing so before the need is critical. Our veterans served us proudly and have earned the support and assistance provided by the local Veterans Service Office as well as State and Federal programs. Contact Suzi at 916-780-3290 for a tour of the Office which is located at 1000 Sunset Blvd., Suite 115 in Rocklin. For more information check out the VSO

Polio Video Getting to Zero Matters: In 1952 the threat was very real as it was the worst US outbreak in our history. But then it got worse throughout the world.  In 1988, 350,00 new cases which in perspective is greater than 1,000 cases per day. This year there have 13 new cases which represents a small backslide from 2016. We will know that polio has been defeated when there are no new cases for 3 years. https://www.rotary.org/en/why-zero-matters-polio-eradication
