Program-   Auburn Rotary Cookie Baking Contest - Cathy Bianchi, Professional Judge

Rotarians learned you can have your cake and eat it too, cookie style.  We were entertained and educated on the system and procedures of professional judging of baked goods.  Our very own, Cathy Bianchi challenged several Auburn Rotarians to put their baking skills to the test.  Additionally, Cathy lined up two judges, Jeff Ambrosia and Forrest Eklund, who learned they bit off more than they could chew as Cathy also educated them on proper judging techniques; as everyone attending learned baking judging is not for the faint of heart.

Two styles of cookies were entered:  Chocolate Chip and Sugar with three participants of each style entering into the contest; although only five participants entered the contest as one of the chocolate chip cookies did not show up.  Each participant entered six cookies to be judged based on:  even in size (uniformity) – consistent cooking look (appearance) – top and bottom consistency – style and flavor (appearance).  Jeff judged the sugar cookies and Forrest the sugar cookies.

Also speaking of styles, even our judges had difference styles.  When the critiques and results were communicated…Forrest was compared to a Keebler Soft Batch (easy and soft) while Jeff was compared to Biscotti (hard and demanding).  In the end, the aficionado [Cathy] offered critique too which added additional flavor to the results.

All walked away with a ribbon and smile.  Thank you participants.

Cathy educated Rotarians about baking and judging, including:
  • There are two judging styles for baking:  American – each entrant is judged against one-another, thus only one 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ribbon; and Danish – scores are given to all entrants with 1st going to all entrant with scores between 90-100, 2nd to all scores between 80-89 and 3rd with scores between 70 and 79.
  • Choose carefully on the brand of butter and chocolate chips you use; they definitely affect the cooking and flavor.
  • Nuts should be cooked first before adding to cookies; 15 min at 350 degrees.
  • Don’t use imitation vanilla.
  • When judging no matter what, never let you facial expression display your like or dislike.
  • If you want to be a judge, just sign up at a local event.
  • Cookies are easy to judge due to small bites; Pies are harder to judge due to having to take 4-bites for all pies (top, bottom, filling and crust).
  • Judges can clean their pallet with crackers, chicken and/or turkey (never would have thought poultry to clean the pallet!).
  • Most pies Cathy had to judge in one sitting; 70!!
If all this speak of cookies and baking whet your appetite….more information to consider…

Member Re-Introductory Speech - Mary Jo Payne

Mary Jo was born on Aberdeen Proving Ground to Albert and Marguerite a father who was Colonel in the US Army and commander of the base.  As the youngest of four she has two older brothers and an older sister.
Transferred a few times as a kid including Ohio and Benicia Arsenal (California); the best part that I can remember about Benicia was the big commander’s house we lived in and roaming the grounds with

Candy, her protective dog … story is that I was down playing by the railroad tracks and the MP’s had to coax me into the back of their pickup with Candy in order to get me home!

The base was closed so Dad retired and moved to Loomis, building their first dream home in Hidden Valley.  I ran the low voltage wire in the attic and started to learn about construction.  This was back in 1963, when the valley had every activity available to a youngster like me.  Swim lessons at the lake, Tennis lessons in the neighbor’s back yard, sewing lessons at the other neighbor’s large family room and of course horse riding trails that went forever!   At 11, I drove my parent’s nuts with a request for a horse, a 5 year old Standard/Appaloosa mare who grew up with me riding Western to English, to gymkhana to jumping and finally endurance riding, this horse would do anything…

At the end of 8th grade, we moved to Newcastle and built another house.  As a member Del Oro Band we were fortunate to attend a Music Festival in Vienna in my Junior Year!  As you all know I still do bleed Black and Gold!

After graduating high school, I attended Sierra College, traveled to Europe, transferred to UC San Diego then up to UC Davis, graduating with a Food Chemistry degree.  While at Davis, I was introduce me to a nice young man, Joel, who had a business in Loomis, we met on a fishing trip and even though I out-fished everyone, Joel decided to date me and eventually proposed.

Joel and I married in 1983, bought a 600 sq ft home in Loomis.  We tore into this place, adding extensively and people would come by and shake their heads saying we bought a lot of work.  A year and a half later our first daughter, Katie arrived and 4 years later our 2nd daughter Gina arrived.  Once Katie came along, I left Campbell soup and entered the world of Mortgage.
Joel and I were active in the development of the Loomis School playgrounds and the continued improvements for the 5 city Girls softball fields out on King Rd.  Lots of nights closing the snack bar and grooming the fields!  Besides softball, we spent summers boating, and traveling with the girls.

In between these activities, we moved to our forever home on Williams Pond Lane in Loomis.  This house too went through a major remodel in 2005 which we lived without a kitchen for 18 months.  Both girls vowed they would marry rich after spending a couple of days in the attic bagging old insulation!
Both girls attended Del Oro and Katie went on to Davis and Gina to San Diego State.

Yes we are officially empty nesters.  Enjoying traveling and getting gray hair from both girls adventures.  As we speak, Katie is in Thailand and moving back to Grenada on the 21st.  and Gina is closing escrow on her forever home in Orange county on the 21st….as of this date no grand babies!!

I appreciate everyone who has done business with me in Rotary over the years and am happy for the friendships made. Rotary has allowed me to give back to the community.

Dear Auburn Rotarians,

Brian and I are looking forward to seeing you at  the area 5 Foundation dinner on March 21st.

Last year when I was in San Diego at the International Assembly , my last week of training for DG, I had the opportunity to purchase President Barry Rassin's official theme tie.  Well I purchased 13 of them and President Barry autographed each one.  I will be auctioning them off at the area Foundation Dinners.  If you are unable to be at the dinner and would like to submit a bid just let me know. Your donation for the tie does go directly to the Foundation in your name. I have attached a picture of the tie for you to see. These ties are not able to be purchased by any of the RI vendors.  They are only sold to the DGs at this event so they are pretty special:)

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.
