Program
Presenters were Dennis and Betty Bennett, who shared their experiences hiking the famed Tour de Mont Blanc trail, a 105 mile loop around the Mont Blanc Massif that takes hikers through parts of France, Italy and Switzerland. Why did they make the hike? Purely and simply to celebrate Betty’s birthday.

The Mont Blanc Massif is the highest peak in Europe at 15,771 feet. Hikers from all over the world convene in Chamonix, France but actually begin the hike from a small town not too distant the city. The viewscapes are many and photos shared depicted panoramic views of the alpine environment that has a short hiking season – just June – September. Betty and Dennis hiked in a group of six – maybe it was eight – and completed the hike in 10 days. Betty shared that they began their hike the day following the annual August Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc, which this year was completed by the winner in just 22 hours.

Chamonix is situated at 3,000 feet but the trail ranged from 4,000 to 8,900 feet in elevation. They typically hiked 8 – 10 miles per day, climbed more than 30,000 feet and descended more than 44,000 feet, with leisurely starts around 9:00 a.m. with the expectation to be off the trail by 4:00 p.m. when they would take lodging for the night in B & Bs or local hotels. Closing advice was that if you plan to do this hike, book your lodging, which is very limited, up to a year in advance.

Announcements

Gary Ransom presented our three RYLA campers who then presented a round robin on their experiences at camp. Each felt his or her life changed for the better as they experienced camp activities that helped them more fully understand how they fit into a community.  Friendships were developed from among strangers. Training modules helped to develop leadership capacity, helped them to understand trust in others, and to one student’s surprise, a positive outcome was development of comfort with public speaking. All were grateful for Rotary’s sponsorship and each knew they had broken through barriers that prior to camp had stymied their personal growth.

The Rotary Sunset Bay, Oregon camp out was announced as scheduled for Sept. 8 – 12, 2019. Campers were encouraged to register at their earliest convenience as the campground is filling up. Call 1-800-452-5687 to register. If a cancellation needs to be made at a later time, a minimal fee of just $9.00 would be assessed.

Bill Kirby lost his beloved Labrador after 14 years of faithful companionship and suggested those who lose a pet might find solace if they read Rudyard Kipling’s epic poem, “Power of the Dog.”

Anita Daniels of the Grass Valley Rotary Club has been selected as District Governor for 2021-2022.

Terry Cooney presented a snapshot overview of his life, noting that he went through the Auburn area schools, Sierra College and Sacramento State. He worked his way through school clerking at Lucky Market, situated off Lincoln Way, and later spent 35 years in the title business before retiring. Terry closed by sharing that friends made through association with Rotary can’t be matched.

Steve Galyardt and Bill Radakovitz thanked the several Rotarians and President Kahl for their assistance with staging the Festival of Lights parade on December 1st.

Bridget Powers shared with the Tuesday morning Meddlers group that she would like to see a central square tile in memory of Bud Richardson be considered by Auburn’s Streetscape History and Art Advisory Committee.

Cathy Bianchi announced she has collected 162 gingerbread houses that will be assembled by volunteer Rotarians  on December 17th at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Oroville and at the Boys & Girls Club in Durham on December 18, 2018.
