Meeting Review

Program-
Rotary welcomed Auburn's Interim Police Chief, Lt. Victor Pecoraro who talked about how to protect your home. Lt. Pecoraro originally hails from New Jersey but has now been serving Auburn for 22 years.
Lt. Pecoraro started the presentation informing the group that Auburn now has 4 intersection readers which track license plates and facial recognition which ties into a national database. See related article below about how a stolen vehicle was located due to the device...
The group was asked on the ways to protect your home and easily identified many of them, including: locking your doors (eliminating opportunity), outdoor lighting with motion sensors, home alarms, neighborhood watch programs, know your neighbors, have a dog and keep landscaping trimmed. Many times, burglary is a crime-of-opportunity, it's our duty to eliminate the opportunity.
Other interesting and lessor known ideas/actions were:
- All solicitors need to have a permit and permits are shared with local PD. If you have a solicitor without a permit you can call PD.
- Always feel free to call PD if you see something suspicious [it's prevention]. Many people don't call due to believing someone else will.
- You can call in anonymous if you don't want a patrolman to follow up after you call in.
- You can have the PD check on your home while on vacation; see/submit form: documents/en-ca/037b9785-ce0b-49a2-b5fd-bc62478e5ece/1
Installing perimeter cameras was also talked about and homeowners should ensure: cameras are good quality 1080p, infrared capability, images/video saved to cloud or DVR, cameras are linked to home alarm system and or phone. Unfortunatley they have see too many criminals get away due to poor quality cameras or systems which gave homeowners piece of mind but the PD no evidence.
There is an uprising of false telephone solicitations to gain personal information and money. For example, criminals falsely representing to be from PG&E or the IRS. Our own Vic Gonnella gave the example of the Tax Magistrate calling for past due taxes.
Rotary thanks Lt Pecoraro for an informative presentation and service the City of Auburn.

Courtney Portluck from Out of the Darkness Auburn announced
the upcoming walk on Oct 6th at Railhead Park to register go to:
http://afsp.org/placerco . She provided a moving presentation on suicide and its link to depression building awareness of this preventable and and treatable affliction.
Some stats:
- Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined.
- Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 15 and 64 years in the United States.
- Currently, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
- A person dies by suicide about every 12.3 minutes in the United States.
- Every day, approximately 117 Americans take their own life.
- Ninety percent of all people who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.
- There are 3.5 male suicides for every female suicide, but three times as many females as males attempt suicide.
Depression
- 25 million Americans suffer from depression each year.
- Over 50 percent of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression.
- Depression affects nearly 5-8 percent of Americans ages 18 and over in a given year.
- More Americans suffer from depression than coronary heart disease, cancer, and HIV/AIDS.
- Depression is among the most treatable of psychiatric illnesses. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression respond positively to treatment, and almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. But first, depression has to be recognized.
The best way to prevent suicide is through early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of depression and other mental health conditions.

Recurring Meeting Announcements
Date still TBD on when pig auction will be held
purchase of the hog, Donald, from the Gold Country Fair livestock auction. The bidding was good for those young people who raised critters for auction. Prices were so good that we went over-budget at $6.50 per pound for the 250 lb. Donald, but we’ll hopefully make up some of that when the pig parts are brought to Rotary for resale at a yet to be determined date.

Other Notes
From President Kahl,
As a reminder, if you need to leave the Rotary meeting early ("scooting"), please take a minute before the business portion of the meeting to talk with the speaker, excusing yourself from the presentation. We all have things that come up during the day that do not allow us to stay - it is unavoidable. However, it's a nice touch and courtesy to let the speaker know that you have to leave early.
Have a great rest of the week!
President Kahl
