Our guest speaker, Tracy Kochendorfer, former President of Auburn’s Sunset Rotary, was introduced by Richard Hall, who shared that he and RYLA coordinator Gary Ransom have been in on interviews of applicants for RYLA for the past few years. After sharing a little about the process and noting the Auburn Rotary sponsors at least five RYLA campers, Richard turned the program over to Tracy. Tracy’s program centered on her July experience as a work group Counselor at a 2018 RYLA Camp, held at the Grizzly Creek Campground, located near Portola, CA.
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening – formerly Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is a program wherein Auburn Rotary selects upcoming high school seniors for RYLA camp. At Tracy’s recent camporee, there were 106 campers, all broken into work groups of typically 12 students.
Camp days are long, often lasting well into the evening, but each day start begins with a leadership lesson. As the camp experience continues, students engage in numerous activities as they learn about themselves and ultimately grow into a person greatly changed by the camp experience. Three of the activities engaged in are enumerated below.
Campers engage in learning their Energenetics Profile, which will determine whether they are Social, Structural, Analytical or Conceptual beings. Those several profiles help them understand how they think, or how others think. They also do a ROPES course to build confidence, and they tackle a high wall, at which they will learn how to break down fearsome barriers. For clarification, they do not physically break down the wall. Instead, they use the wall as a turning point at which they will break through a personal challenge by letting it all out, verbally. It is said by some that The Wall is a life-changing experience.
At RYLA the students learn teamwork. They get out of their comfort zone, and they grow from the experience. That is, in part, why they come back changed from who they were on Day 1, of camp. Invariably, the campers return home with leadership skills, a better sense of citizenship, increased confidence in themselves, improved communication skills, greater problem-solving skills, and a plethora of friends with whom they have bonded over the course of their camp experience.
Tracy closed by sharing that the Counselors do everything the students do, and they too learn something of who they are! One does not have to be a Rotarian to become a RYLA Counselor. One can check the RYLA website to learn about becoming a RYLA Counselor.
Our own Amy Austin has been a RYLA Counselor, as has Phyllis Dunstan.

Announcements
If you have promised raffle prizes for the BBQ, kindly get them to Amy Austin or coordinate with her to have her pick them up.
Steve Grundmeier provided an update on the his family's condition. He and the family truly appreciate the support from Rotary and the community. Our thoughts and prayers continue as they heal through a terrible car accident. We can continue to assist and stay informed through Go Fund Me and Caring Bridge.
We need your help to create a memorable silent auction and raffle at the September BBQ. You can donate an item, a gift card or an ever popular "experience". An experience item is an activity that you enjoy and would be willing to share - like leading a hike, taking a group on a boating trip, a lesson or two in your area of expertise or preparing a special meal. Sign up on the clipboard or email Amy Austin. Don't have time right now? We can combine $ from more than one member to create something unique. Need ideas? Ask Amy, Betty or Nancy for suggestions.
Thanks for your support!

The Rotary Club of Auburn Board Scholarship Committee made several suggested changes to the policies and procedures for the Scholarship Program. After review, debate and consideration, their unanimous recommendations were sent to the Rotary Club of Auburn Board of Directors, who voted unanimously to make the changes. Since that time, there have been a few questions about what these changes were and the process of how these changes were considered. In the interest of making sure that all member voices are heard, we will be discussing what happened and why at the Board meeting on September 18th. That meeting will take place at 7am in the Conference Room at Gold Rush Chevy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, thoughts or concerns.
Thank you,
President Kahl
