Virtual Meeting Notes – April 7, 2020

President Announcements

  • Song: President Steve & Richard Hall chose the Rotary Song. We might know how to spell it but we sure had some challenges singing it! Must have been the electronic delay hiding our perfectly harmonized voices. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGZNh2erp9A

  • Pledge: Richard Hall for Mike Holmes

  • Thought: Linda Maeding: Shared a thought from "It's Bound to Happen" by Michael Fox

Pain (a noun) is inevitable; to suffer (a verb) is a choice. Aloneness is inevitable; to be lonely is a choice. Guilt is inevitable; to be ashamed is a choice. Woundedness is inevitable; to be resentful is a choice. Loss is inevitable; to grieve is a choice Uncertainty is inevitable; to be fearful is a choice. Death is inevitable; to live—to fully embrace life—is a choice. Some things (nouns) are bound to happen, but our reaction (verb) doesn’t happen to be bound.

  • Zoom Meeting Host: Richard Hall

  • Photographer: Randy Mealhow

  • Notetaker: Nancy Nittler

  • Prez Steve's opening remarks: Woven through the fabric of virtually every community on earth, service clubs of Kiwanis International, Lions Clubs International, Optimist International, and Rotary International are working safely and diligently to maintain connections with each other and our neighbors so that we can cope with and overcome the effects of COVID-19. We are leveraging the strength of our combined networks of 3.2 million members to provide comfort and hope to those feeling the effects of isolation and fear. And we are focusing our collective skills, resources and ideas to support frontline health workers and first responders as they battle this disease and save lives. In these times of uncertainty, your local service clubs remain committed to meeting the challenge of finding innovative ways to take action together to help communities around the globe heal and thrive – and become more united than ever.

  • Prez Steve thanked Larry Rolufs for taking on the Scholarship Committee. The Committee is moving forward with the scholarship process. Prez Steve also suggested that we consider donating to the Boys & Girls Club the $72 (and counting) that we haven't spent on recent lunch meetings. The Boys & Girls Club are feeding families in dire need of assistance. Send your checks to Steve Galyardt. (409 Olive Orchard Dr. Auburn CA 95603)

  • Forrest announced that he will deliver the Elementary and High School student and teacher awards to each school for distribution.

  • Once again, we had many guests from around the District including: District Governor Randy Van Tassell, District Governor Elect Roberta Pickett and Assistant District Governor Stacy Graham. My apologies if I missed any of our guests!

  • Over 54 attendees this week. We will meet again via Zoom next week with our own Geoff Davis speaking on the topic of antibodies. Look for the email meeting link from Richard Hall.

  • Steve Snyder helped to arrange another very special speaker; Johrita Solari our Rotary International Director for the Big West Zone: Zones 26 & 27. http://www.zone2526.org/ Johrita is one of 17 Directors world wide and spoke to us about using this time for reconnection. Examples: using on-line meetings to keep club connections and continuity of program activities, calling those that might be alone and checking out the Rotary International Volunteer Surge program to help communities with the COVID-19 response.  https://theglobalimpactgroup.org/ .   While ending polio remains the number one goal of Rotary, current events require putting vaccination teams on hold. Other goals like 30% women members by June 2020 are in progress with our two zones averaging 34.5%. Johrita discussed the impact of the coronavirus on the RI Convention cancellation that includes a projected $4.3 million loss to Hawaii. She encouraged us to think creatively about how to replace or restructure meetings, fund raisers and conferences. I think we all join Johrita in being proud to be a Rotarian, especially in this time of global need!

Member Announcement/Happy & Sad Bucks

  • Al: Herb is home, doing better and is in good spirit. Full recovery will take time but as Al says, "Herb's a trooper".

  • Cindy: Sad for granddaughter who is a senior and the impacts the virus will have on senior activities. Girls State has been cancelled impacting her second granddaughter who was selected to attend.

  • Jeff A: Happy bucks for Vickie Weldon at Umpqua Bank. She is doing a GREAT job providing Paycheck Protection application assistance with incredible follow through and is quick to provide information. Brandee adds that all bankers are slammed right now which is why they were not able to attend today. Kudos and happy bucks from Richard H for Juanita Mercado at First Northern bank and Stacy happy buck Lori Tompkins at Union Bank. Big shout out to all our bankers for the critical service they are providing!

  • Brandee: Suggests inviting guests to our on-line meetings as this might be the perfect time for someone who is looking to serve and make a difference. She will bring a guest next week. Brandee gave us an update on AAUW Scholarships - they are requesting donations to expand the number of scholarships they give to outstanding young women who are choosing STEM majors. The need is great and so is the talent of the students. Contact Brandee if you'd like to contribute.

  • Tara: Sad bucks for son Caden who is getting lonely in his third week of staying at home but is being a trooper. Was that bottle you mentioned half-empty or half-full Tara?

  • Peter: The laws around philanthropic giving are changing for individuals and corporations with greater tax credits. Might be a good topic for future meeting. It provides and increased incentive to give.

  • Linda: Thanks to Catherine for coordinating the making of masks for Sutter Auburn Faith staff. Much needed and much appreciated.
