"The Dam that Never Was"

Most folks in Auburn can be categorized into one of these three buckets:  new to Auburn and hearing about an elusive Auburn Dam, hike the canyons and see construction remnants, or know about the Auburn Dam but may not know how/why it came tobe and pass.  Whichever category fits you, Steve gave the group fact filled, historical review of the largest federally approved dam that was never built.

Highlights are:
  • The flood of 1862 deemed the necessity of building dams to protect Sacramento.
  • Meetings about an Auburn Dam date back to 1947.
  • Folsom dam was built in 1955 and only took one week to fill up and is credited with saving Sacramento.
  • Although approved to build, Federal funds were reallocated during the Vietnam War postponing construction.

  • The early 70’s saw a shift in public sentiment away from the needs of the dam; including  The Pacific Legal Foundation getting an injunction on construction as it was relayed the was not needed for flood control.
  • Further research showed the dam would be built where several faults converge creating a possibility of failure.

Potential reasons why the dam was never built include:  the cost-benefit-return was incalculable, the costs of the dam continued to rise, flood issue could be solved by lowering the Folsom spillway (lower cost solution).

Regardless of your leaning, the dam will surly continue to be topic of conversation as it’s considered to be A Rasputin of government Projects:  impossible to kill.

Announcements

Steve Grundmeier provided an update on the his family's condition.  He and the family truly appreciate the support from Rotary and the community.  Our thoughts and prayers continue as they  heal through a terrible car accident.  We can continue to assist and stay informed through Go Fund Me  and Caring Bridge.

Congrats to Auburn Rotary Club for being nominated by Placer HS District as Education Supporter.  Peter Efstathiu thanks Auburn Rotary for its continued positive "Impact on the Community."  Dinner held on Sept 7th.

Peter Konrad updated fund raising for Salvation Army, currently at $46,700 of $50,000 goal.

Gary Ransom shared six letters from the RYLA students and thier "life changing" experience .  The letters are touching and support the importance of the program; all are encouraged to read them on the link below.

Cindy and Forrest are offering car pool if you are going to Avenues of Service.

Reach out to Herb Grounds and sign up for Gate duty at the Auburn Fair.

Happy Campers - Coordinate your travel itinerary with Bob Santin.  Bob is planning several activities and wants to ensure your are included.

Rotary Raft Trip - After a late start, the fun and excitement began down the river.  There were several accusations of people and boats who went swimming due to the rapids, without pictures to support, it was likely they just wanted "to cool down", not that the rapids tossed them.

Please remember when using checks to pay for Lunch; Payable to Auburn Elks Club.

Other Notes

The song choice by Tom, Cindy and Randy:  “She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain".

In case you did not know......

"She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" (also sometimes called simply "Coming 'Round the Mountain") is a traditional folk song often categorized as children's music.

The song is derived from a Christian song known as "When the Chariot Comes". The song's style is reminiscent of the call and response structure of many folk songs; among them are songs with a similar verse-structure but variant melodies, such as If You're Happy and You Know It.

These kinds of songs can be traced back to 17th-century, British radicals.

From Silent Auction Committee:

We need your help to create a memorable silent auction and raffle at the September BBQ. You can donate an item, a gift card or an ever popular "experience". An experience item is an activity that you enjoy and would be willing to share - like leading a hike, taking a group on a boating trip, a lesson or two in your area of expertise or preparing a special meal. Sign up on the clipboard or email Amy Austin. Don't have time right now? We can combine $ from more than one member to create something unique. Need ideas? Ask Amy, Betty or Nancy for suggestions.

The Rotary Club of Auburn Board Scholarship Committee made several suggested changes to the policies and procedures for the Scholarship Program. After review, debate and consideration, their unanimous recommendations were sent to the Rotary Club of Auburn Board of Directors, who voted unanimously to make the changes. Since that time, there have been a few questions about what these changes were and the process of how these changes were considered. In the interest of making sure that all member voices are heard, we will be discussing what happened and why at the Board meeting on September 18th. That meeting will take place at 7am in the Conference Room at Gold Rush Chevy. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, thoughts or concerns.

Thank you,
President Kahl
