Program

Linda Maeding introduced our guest speaker, Mary West. Mary, a CalFire employee, has a passion for hiking local trails when off-duty. For the past four years, she has submitted a weekly column to the Auburn Journal, with each column detailing information about a local or regional trail.  That activity has led to her publishing a book, “Day Hiker – The Gold Country Trail Guide,” within which she includes narratives about each trail. She spices up the pages of her booklet with photographs of flowers, viewscapes, wildlife, trail signage and even her hiking companion, Stella, the wonder dog. Mary is proud that her sons, Canyon Daniel and Ocean Shiraz, who together with their Dad, Micah Tober, are acknowledged to join her on hikes to known, and yes, secret places too.

The hikes noted in “Day Hiker” have each been published in the Auburn Journal. A second book in the “Day Hiker” series is available on Amazon, and a third book is a work in progress. Each book will portray 28 to 31 trails that can stimulate one’s soul with exposures to scenery, history, companionship, good water, fresh air, and more. Mary’s enthusiasm for the outdoors shines through in her writing.

Also reference an older presentation from Cal Fire...

Meeting Opener

Today’s opening song, “That’s Amore,” was offered by a Italian-blood heritage quintet comprised of Al Lombardo, Michele

Colbi, Bob Santin, Cindy Eklund and Preston Marx on the piano. Composer Harry Warren and lyricist Jack Brooks composed the “That’s Amore” in 1953 and Dean Martin made it a major hit and signature song the same year. Dean Martin might have turned in his grave had he been listening in, but all Rotarians and guests enjoyed offering their own rendition.

Guests of Rotarians included Jane Grundmeier , Chloe Godfrind and Mary West, our guest speaker.

Visiting Rotarian: Kay Whitaker from the Passport Club.

Weekly Trivia Question-

Given yesterday was the 76th birthday of Beatle’s lead guitarist, George Harrison, deceased November 29, 2001, the Trivia Question of the day was, “What was the Beatle’s first single?”

The answer offered was incorrect, but the first single was “Love Me Do,” released in 1963.

Happy/Sad Bucks

Cindy Eklund shared that her granddaughter, a student at Foresthill High School, is promoting a Woodland Christian vs. Foresthill baseball game scheduled at Raley Field on March 26 at 6:30 p.m. While game attendance and parking is free, one can support Foresthill High by purchasing a River Cat Ticket Voucher for $25.  The voucher can later be redeemed for a ticket in the Senate Section at Raley Field for any regular season game. Redemption of the voucher will result in a $45 saving. Contact Cindy for additional information.

Any Austin has welcomed granddaughter # 2.

Scott Christensen announced that his son, Kyle, has been selected to attend the American Legion sponsored Boys State, June 22 – 29, 2019. The activity will be held at CSU, Sacramento.

Linda Maeding is looking forward to welcoming a great-grandchild.

Sam Frazier’s wife, Pam, will undergo knee replacement surgery February 27, 2019. Prayers are requested.

Al Lombardo underwent successful cataract surgery this past week and to his surprise, was transported to and from the Sacramento area clinic by our own Sam Frazier, driving his stretch limo. Even the eye surgeon was impressed and told Al his surgery was the most perfect surgery he had ever performed. The back-story was that Al lavished the medical staff with a yarn that could have been a stretch of Rotarian ethics. Might Al be excused, given his Italian heritage?

New Member Induction

Past President Bob Santin introduced Bob Richardson, a returning former member of Auburn Rotary and inducted him into the club while noting that Bob’s affiliation with Rotary dates to the period when Bob was the City Manager of Lemon Grove, CA. Bob came to Auburn as its City Manager in 2003 and instituted “Project Auburn,” a unique program that called upon Rotarians and volunteers from across our community for a day of sprucing up our city. After serving Auburn for a number of years, Bob took a hiatus and served Grass Valley for a time before returning to Auburn.  Auburn Rotary warmly welcomes the return of Bob Richardson.

New Member Introductory Speech

Michele Colbi shared her life through discussion surrounding a PowerPoint presentation that fully demonstrated some of her technical skills. She originated in the “Constitution State,” Connecticut, where at an early age she involved herself with the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and as a high school student became a community volunteer. Along the way she delivered 1,200 newspapers on a bi-weekly basis.

Michele relocated a half-dozen times as she pursued a career path and worked for well-known companies including DeLorean and Toyota. Eventually she landed in Auburn and lends a hand with the Salvation Army, the Elks, Wreaths Across America, the Norwood Life Society. And, Rotary.  Michele believes in community service, but she notes her greatest gift is her son. In her spare time, in 2011, Michele began to establish the Black Vette boutique winery where she grows Italian varieties of grapes, including Montepulciano, Primitivo and Sangiovese. Lately, in 2017, she obtained Petit Verdot grapes from a neighboring vineyard and in 2018, for Petit Verdot priced under $34.99, was awarded a Silver Medal at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, noted as the largest wine competition in the US.

Michele offered Rotarians what remains of her 2018 bottling at a special price and generously will make a donation to Rotary for each bottle sold.

The Black Vette Winery is the home of Michele’s prized 1966 black Corvette.
