Program

Guest Speaker-Dr. Greg Lichtman
Russ Sato introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Greg Lichtman, an Orthopedic surgeon from Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital . Dr. Lichtman specializes in shoulder, knee and hip surgery and spoke extensively about shoulder issues.

54% of people age 60 and over with no shoulder pain, in fact have a torn rotator cuff.  The percentage is 28% in those between 40-60. And who cares about anyone under 40 !! (my comment)

The most common cause of shoulder pain is impingement syndrome which leads to a tear in the rotator cuff. The first line of treatment is physical therapy, 75% of people who are symptomatic for shoulder pain are helped by physical therapy.

Treatment starts with an x-ray and understanding of the individuals history as it relates to the shoulder. Then comes a physical exam followed by physical therapy.  Also the physician may recommend a cortisone injection or suggest activity modification.

If all else fails, surgery will be performed to re-attach an acute tear.

Top Tips from Dr. Lichtman:
  1. Be smart
  2. Listen to your body
  3. Maintain periscapular strength
  4. Have fun !

Excellent presentation Dr. Lichtman !! Thanks Russ for arranging this presentation.
