Virtual Meeting Notes – May 12, 2020

President Announcements

  • Pledge: Forrest Eklund

  • Zoom Meeting Host: Richard Hall

  • Photographer: Randy Mealhow

  • Notetaker/Bulletin: Nancy Nittler

  • Thought of the Day: Nancy Nittler - The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Socrates

  • Prez Steve's opening remarks at our eight on-line meeting:

We have a lot to cover in our hour together so let's get started!

  • Over 53 attendees this week. We will meet again via Zoom next week. Look for the email meeting link from Richard Hall.

  • Betty Bennett introduced our RYE student Jade, her parents who were joining us from their home in France, her current host family Cheryl and Mindy, and prior host family members Mai-Ly and Mailia (Dan was working). Jade is leaving Sunday and today she made her final exchange presentation with stories from her time with each host family. Her power point including pictures from each of the three families and school. Jade had an active year as a member of the Placer High School tennis team, skiing and golfing, "camping" in the Gustavson's backyard complete with s'mores during the stay-at-home order, and played hours of ping pong. We join Jade in being disappointed that her time was cut short due to the virus but grateful for the opportunity to get to know her.

  • Catherine McGregor was our speaker today on the topic of Compassionate Care at the End of Life. Catherine did a masterful presentation on what can be a culturally difficult topic. She used both data from studies and her years of experience in the field to encourage us to think about our wishes well in advance and to be sure we have documented and communicated them clearly.  One resource Catherine recommended is the Go Wish "game" at codaalliance.org as a way to help sort through the decision points that become critical as we transition to our end of life. Preston Marx also recommended the book "Being Mortal" - see his separate email for more information.
