Program

Our own Ernie Strobel, assisted by his daughter, Melissa, explained Rotary’s Global Rewards Program. Ernie is our District 5190 Chairman for Global Rewards.  The program was established in 2015 and today boasts of more than 1,800 business organizations that share their products and services with Rotarian consumers. One can check the website, www.rotaryglobalrewards.org to find information about discounts and special offers, along with opportunities to give back to Rotary. Well-known companies, including Amazon, Walmart, Fed Ex, Hertz, Holiday Inn, Marriot, Lenovo and Domino’s, to mention a few, each have situational opportunities for Rotarians.  Discounts are available on everything from travel, dining, and entertainment to office supplies, insurance, car rentals, and more.  An App for your mobile phone can be found by opening your App Store and searching for Rotary Global Rewards.

Included among the many businesses is a travel interruption program, Emergency Assistance Plus (EA+).

Rotarians who join EA+ through Rotary receive a 30% discount on the annual fee. Both family and individual plans are available, and the benefit plan is effective across the world. There are no limitations for age or pre-existing conditions, and the program is highly rated by the Better Business Bureau. Learn more by calling (800) 841-6238 or by visiting the website: www.memberextra.com/rotary
Bart Ruud has had personal experience with EA+ and shared a brief testimonial about his interaction with the company. Speak to Bart, or speak directly to Ernie for more information.

Meeting Opener
The opening song, “Happy Trails (to You),” was dedicated to Tom Edmiston, who was attending his last Auburn Rotary meeting before moving to Oregon. Good wishes are extended to Tom as he opens a new chapter in his life experience.

Weekly Meeting Question-

What gifts did the magi bring to Jesus? The table queried offered incorrect suggestions, including cannabis, and paid dearly. The correct answer should have been the three gifts, each with a spiritual meaning: gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of deity, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of death. The magi visit occurred when Jesus was perhaps two years of age, and should not be confused with the shepherd’s visit to the baby Jesus in the manger.

GuestsBill Kirby introduced Auburn’s new Chief of Police Ryan Kinnan. Chief Kinnan took command of the Auburn Police Department on December 1, 2018.

Carolyn Metzger introduced her daughter, Eralise, home for the holidays from the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR where she has made the Dean’s List at completion of her first academic quarter at the university where she also is a member of the University band.

Announcements

Community BBQ final numbers: Net profit was $56,202. Congratulations are extended to Jeff Wood for his leadership with the project.

Casino Night: Peter Konrad announced planning for a February 23, 2019 Casino Night, to be held at Ceronix. (Thank you Don and Kay Whitaker.) All four of Auburn’s Rotary Clubs will participate. Save the date; details will follow.

Betty Bennett brought forth for auction a unique photo frame festooned with military medals and ribbons from all branches of our military services. The auction was intended to help offset President Kahl’s  conscripted needs not yet realized by imposing fines on the membership. A bid of $100, made by Dan Gustavson, took the prize. The photo frame came from an array of collectibles accumulated over time by Betty’s Dad. Thank you, Betty and Dan.

Board Meeting Report
  • Randy Tooker, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Placer County, was presented with a donation of $2,000 to assist with Club operations. Over the past year, more than 1,000 youngsters have benefitted from programs offered at the Club. Randy extended an invitation for anyone wanting to learn more about the Club to arrange for a personal tour of its facility and operations.
  • President Kahl announced that Auburn Rotary membership stands at 100. New members, Vickie Weldon and Sam Frazier were approved for membership. Welcome, Vickie and welcome back, Sam.
  • Acres of Hope had counted on a donor coming through with nine 3-foot artificial Christmas trees, but the promise fell through. Dr. Bill Kirby stepped up to provide funds so that each of the nine family’s needing a tree will have that tree in time for Christmas. Thank you, Bill, for your thoughtfulness.

Benevolence to the extreme: Twenty years ago, Bill and Jenny Jansen established a long-term plan which would have them become benefactors to a then unknown specific cause. What they knew was that they would make an investment in a charitable trust that would one day benefit our community and Rotary. Fast forward to December 18, 2018, when Bill announced he and Jenney were contributing their charitable trust funds to Auburn Rotary’s Community Fund D, the Rotary Club of Auburn Endowment Fund. The long-term goal is to grow this fund to $200,000. Before today, the fund stood at about $80,000. Now, with the Jansen contribution of $56,500 it stands at something in the order of $136,500. Bill and Jenny take well-deserved pride in this distribution while they are still of sound mind and body. So what does one say? Thank you Bill and Jenny, for your thoughtful planning for something that is a legacy unto itself.

But there is more. Bill and Jenny Jansen also distributed $16,000 to the Auburn Recreation District. Those funds surely will be carefully managed our Auburn Recreation District Administrator, Kahl Muscott and his Directors.

New Member Biography
New to Auburn Rotary Club red badge member Jim Evans, a 1956 graduate of Placer High School (along with classmate Don Yamaski), a long-time Rotarian and now a resident of Lake of the Pines shared insights of his passions for Service, Food and Wine, Family, Art and Travel. Jim attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he studied engineering, math and science. Jim and his wife, Pat, have been married 50 years and have two daughters. As Jim put it, surely tongue in cheek, the children were brought into our world in 1971 and 1973 for tax deduction purposes, and he and Pat love them dearly. Jim highlighted his talk with photos of food and art experienced in places like France, Spain, Italy and Sweden, and he also shared photos of his service with the Rotary Club of Orange, CA.

Welcome, Jim, to Auburn Rotary.
