  • Our program speaker was Dr. Wen Chen speaking on the Human Rights Movement in China. Wen was born in China at the end of the Great Cultural Revolution. Being victims of the horrific atrocity that killed 2 million intellectuals and destroyed traditional Chinese culture, Wen's parents had mixed feelings about her education. Despite their discouragement, Wen eventually won a national prize at a science competition when she was 16. Hence, she was accepted into a top university for undergraduate study. In 1994, Wen came to the US for graduate school and earned a doctorate in Biology at the California Institute of Technology in 2000. Because of her personal experience of being brainwashed in China, she decided to be a voice for the voiceless. Wen has given 2,000 lectures since 2012. Wen spoke of those executed for practicing a form of meditation called "Falun Gong", and the resulting government harvesting of organs from those killed. Up to 90% of all transplants in Chine come from those executed for practicing Falun Gong mediation. Because of poor medical practices in China, up to 50% of all transplant recipients die either in surgery or post operation. The Chinese are subject to government censorship and all internet information is filtered. Many Chinese are now taking action to promote greater human rights and freedom of information. Wen shared that 357 million people,  over half of the Chinese Communist Party, have quit the Party. Dr. Chen has not been back to Chine since 1998 because of fear of retaliation by the Chinese Government for her exposure of their human rights violations.

Club Business

  • Incoming Board member Monti Reynolds will be resigning from the Board of Directors, effective July 1, 2020. The Past Presidents nominated Al Lombardo to fill Monti’s two-year term. The club voted unanimously to approve the appointment of Al Lombardo. Congratulations Al!

  • Reintroduction: Bob Haydon is proud to be a third generation Auburnite. His grandfather came to Auburn in 1872, his father settled here in 1936 and he was born here in the 40's Bob gave us an overview of his history in southern California, the military, banking and of meeting his wife, Connie, in the sixth grade. Bob has been a Rotarian since 1976 and in 2017 retired from banking for the second (and final!) time. As Bob concluded, "Life is Good"!
