Program-

Linda Maeding introduced Ryan Kinnan, Chief of Police, Auburn, CA. Chief Kinnan has been Auburn’s Chief of Police for about four months.

Chief Kinnan grew up in Southern California and as a late teen wanted excitement in his life. He found that as a parachute rigger with the U.S. Marine Corps, with whom he served four years. Upon leaving the military, Chief Kinnan concluded he wanted a career in law enforcement. His first job was with the Ventura P.D. where he served for six years. He then joined a newly developed department in 2006 in Citrus Heights, CA.

Chief Kinnan came to Auburn in November 2018. He believes in community oriented policing and in problem oriented policing and particularly loves connecting with the citizens of Auburn. Of note, he shared that most of policing is behind the scenes work. He also noted that the APD is only a small part of the pie, and that our citizens are the larger part. Police work is data-driven. Command has to sort out the best use of its resources and meet the challenges presented.  With a background in general and special investigations, and in youth and family services, he freely shared that his experience and training has helped him take a fresh look at perceived needs in Auburn. He is dedicated, as is the department, to providing public safety, protection and service through transparency and a community oriented approach to policing. The Department’s “Coffee With A Cop” program, and the “Citizens Awareness Academy, “ plus training of Explorer Scouts are just three programs mentioned as a part of community outreach.

As a career law enforcement professional, Chief Kinnan is concerned that policing is being hamstrung by legislative and court action. The recent Proposition 47 loosened law enforcement control, and two bills under current consideration, CA Senate Bill 230, together with CA Assembly Bill 392 are particular concerns. Chief Kinnan speculated the SB 230 may be the least destructive to law enforcement.

Chief Kinnan is proud of the work his officers and staff accomplish. Learn more about our Auburn Police Department by following the link available at www.auburn.ca.gov

Our Opening Song was led by Betty Bennett, who shared that Chloe Godfrind, our RYE student from Belgium, had flown home to attend burial services for her beloved grandfather. Trivia Question: With baseball season kicking off, President Kahl wrapped his question(s) around two of his favorite things, baseball and The Simpsons.

“What is the name of the fictitious minor league baseball team featured on episodes of the animated sitcom, The Simpsons? “ The table could not correctly answer the question, leading them to be offered a 2 for 1 opportunity. The correct answer would have been, the Springfield Isotopes.

The second question, “What major league baseball player was described as
the Wizard of Oz?”  The correct answer, thus escaping fines, was Ozzie Smith. Osborne Earl Smith was called the Wizard of Oz for his phenomenal fielding feats. A 15-time All-Star, Ozzie Smith won 13 consecutive Gold Gloves and is usually regarded as the greatest defensive shortstop in the history of baseball.

Happy/Sad Bucks

Cathy Bianchi’s husband, Joe, applied for a passport but was denied because he was adopted at birth and apparently such circumstances are problematic. A suggestion was made that if Joe contacts his Congressman, the matter might be resolved to his satisfaction.

Al Lombardo and wife, Mary, had a celebratory marriage anniversary in Reno, where they had traveled by train. They enjoyed a nice weekend, but getting home was a challenge because of compromised train schedules. They were rescued by a friend who drove to Reno and returned them home.

Mary Jo Payne and her husband Joe moved their daughter from a condo to a newly purchased home.

Bruce Lundberg and Vic Gonnella share a granddaughter who has been a star basketball player at Colfax High School, but who has also recently joined the track team. On the occasion of her first 440 race (a quarter-mile), she ran the distance in 62 seconds. Wow! As a result, she will run at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. (Vic has some health challenges and Bruce asked for consideration of prayers on his behalf.)

Barb Besana allowed that she enjoyed the Foundation Dinner and then took in a Spring Training game in AZ at which the SF Giants were defeated with a score of 13 to 2.

Bill Radakovitz told of his recent medical procedure, akin to older adults as a screening procedure, and noticed that our own Steve Snyder was at the outpatient clinic for the same procedure.

Betty Bennett wondered aloud whether the Foundation Dinner keynote speaker, Zabit Aimal, was better than the ten days she and Dennis recently spent on Maui.

Richard Hall shared that he was happy to be back to Rotary after something of a hiatus.

New Member Talk

Jeff Spoor shared that he was born in Bishop, CA and with experience in his Dad’s business became a 3rd generation Heating & Air Conditioning contractor.  He was attracted to motorcycling at a young age, turned pro in 1978 and raced motocross for many years, sometimes sustaining horrific injuries, but generally ready to race again within weeks of injury. He gave it up for a time, but in 2005 set the goal of riding in the Loretta Lynn Motocross Championship, held annually at the Lynn family ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN.  While practicing for that race, which permits only 40 riders in a rider class from across the U.S, Jeff crashed and was run over by another couple riders. His injuries were life threatening and he essentially died on a backboard while being transported to medical aid. Medical science and perhaps a guardian angel sustained him, and he gave up riding. Jeff opened his own business, Spoor’s Heating & Air Conditioning in Meadow Vista in 2000 and now has a second business location on Sacramento St. in Auburn. His son returned to the HVAC business from other aspirations in 2018 and is the 4th generation of the Spoor family to offer heating and air conditioning services.  Jeff credits his wife and business partner, Nikki, as the glue that has made the business a success.

With delivery of his “New Member Talk,” Jeff took possession of his Blue Badge. Congratulations, Jeff.
