Auburn’s Confluence High School Internship Coordinator, Melany Hall, accompanied by two students, Marissa and Isaiah, presented an overview of Placer Union High School District’s continuation high school. The school currently serves 75 students, age 16 and older, which essentially limits the program to those of Junior or Senior standing.
The Confluence High program centers on Big Picture Learning, a modality that is focused on Exploration, Empowerment and Community. Simplified, BPL is personalized education that is unique for each student, is focused on learning in the real world and is wrapped around learning goals. Advisors, Mentors and Parents support the learning program, which emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration between the school and its community, effective communication, learning how to learn, and how to navigate in the world of work. Students are immersed in learning projects that are based on their interests.
Numerous local businesses support Confluence High’s programs. Specifically mentioned were Roper’s Jewelers, the Placer County Animal Shelter, Mertage Motors, Strictly Toyondas, Echo Valley Ranch Supply, Sierra Saw, Acres of Hope, PC Solutions, Edgewood Veterinary Clinic, the Auburn Recreation District, and a host of other entities that comprise the business fabric of Auburn.
Confluence High’s success is well documented. Student achievement, in a sense, follows the adage of, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” In today’s world, Big Picture Learning transforms the theory and practice of education.
