They're an iconic (and beloved) symbol of the American West: wild horses. According to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), over 64,000 wild horses roam the western United States, with roughly 75% of them galloping throughout most of Nevada and portions of California. The most recent migration, a herd, moving from Northern Nevada to Mono County in the Eastern Sierra, is reigniting a decades-long debate between protecting these symbolic creatures and the sustainability of the landscape. Over the years, these horses have dominated public lands to the point where some consider them a destructive nuisance. However, others believe they are a vital aspect of the ecosystem, and more needs to be done to increase their numbers. To tell us more about wild horses and the complicated issues surrounding them, Dr. Amanda Gearhart, is a professor at the University of Nevada, and rangeland scientist who focuses on restoring Nevada rangelands.

How a difficult to manage and neurotic ex show horse won over the hearts of a couple, Lori and Nigel to become a top performing endurance horse leading him to the ultimate ride of all time, The Tevis Cup. Short stories leading to how Hot Wheelz and Lori together as partners overcame adversity, Lori had never heard of the sport but was determined to experience the grueling test of true grit through the famous Sierra Mountains in one day over 100 miles.

The Fun Committee and Helen Ornellas, member and museum docent, have put together a tour of the very popular museum, train ride and lunch at the Rio City Cafe. Peter Konrad is willing to drive his 33 passenger bus.

We will have a small work party to prep the house for painting; pressure washing and minor paint scraping. We will start at 10am and should be finished in 2-3 hours. We will need four volunteers to assist.

It is our goal to assist you in really understanding more, which in turn should generate even more enthusiasm. Questions you might have would include, “what exactly is the role of the board of directors” and “what committees can I become a part of?”

We are offering two dates that will allow you to choose which best fits your busy schedules. The first one will be held on Thursday April 20^th, 12:30 at Ashford Park. Bring your lunch, a folding chair, and any and all questions that you may have. The second date is Saturday May 13, 12:30 also at Ashford Park. Feel free to bring your children. There is a playground there, and we will sit nearby in order to keep an eye on them.

Probation Manager Johnson has been with Placer County Probation for 17 years. He has worked in a variety of positions and units, including the Juvenile Detention Facility, Tahoe Juvenile Field, Juvenile Placement/Court, Alternative Sentencing/Pre-Trial, and Adult Field.

It’s been awhile since our club had a “This Old House” work project but we are set to start the tradition again! This year's home is owned by a 79 year old widow who lives by herself on a fixed income and has no immediate family in the area. She was literally brought to tears when she heard we would be helping her. We will be helping her by doing minor clean up, painting her house and removing a fallen tree that fell this past winter.

This is a truly worthy Rotary project as it builds “Good Will and is Beneficial to All Concerned”!

The annual Foundation Dinner will include all Auburn clubs. $55 per person. The speaker will be the dynamic and inspiring Rotarian, Motorcycle Bob.
